John Schleinich Memorial 2022 January 7-9 CCC
Entries will close January 4th for the 2022 Schleinich Memorial. All sections will be FIDE rated this year. Calgary Junior Events
The Calgary Junior chess club decided to change dates of the youth events. Calgary Chess Challenge moved to Feb 12 and Calgary Youth to March 19. The 2022 schedule has now been updated.
2021 AB Junior Championships
The 2021 AB Junior Championships had two parts. The first was the Closed Championship and it took place on the weekend of November 6-7. It consisted of a 6 player Round-Robin featuring some of the strongest juniors in Alberta. Those included: Paris Dorn, Mark Ivanescu, Anand Rishi Chandra, Hemant Srinivasan, Maxim Vasic and Jinghui Bai. Paris Dorn from Edmonton emerged as the winner with 4/5 and earned ACA sponsored funding for a trip to Canadian Junior in 2022. The second portion was Open and under 1300 sections which this year took place online on December 19th. The following players won prizes: Open section: Matthew Ivanescu (1st, Edmonton), Mark Ivanescu(2nd, Edmonton), Jonathan Wu (3rd, Calgary). Alberta Senior’s (Frank Kluytmans Memorial) and Women’s Championship – Dec 11-12
The Calgary Chess Club will host the 2021 Alberta Women’s and Senior’s (Frank Kluytmans Memorial) Championship. 1st prize in both tournaments entitles you to a $500 travel grant to the Senior/Women’s Canadian Championship in addition to the prize money. Aaron Sequillion RIP
Longtime Edmonton chess player Aaron Sequillion has passed away November 21 unexpectedly at the age of 33. Aaron had achieved a CFC rating as high as 2247 and most recently participated in the 2021 Banff Open.
