2021 AB Junior Championships

The 2021 AB Junior Championships had two parts. The first was the Closed Championship and it took place on the weekend of November 6-7. It consisted of a 6 player Round-Robin featuring some of the strongest juniors in Alberta. Those included: Paris Dorn, Mark Ivanescu, Anand Rishi Chandra, Hemant Srinivasan, Maxim Vasic and Jinghui Bai. Paris Dorn from Edmonton emerged as the winner with 4/5 and earned ACA sponsored funding for a trip to Canadian Junior in 2022. The second portion was Open and under 1300 sections which this year took place online on December 19th. The following players won prizes: Open section: Matthew Ivanescu (1st, Edmonton), Mark Ivanescu(2nd, Edmonton), Jonathan Wu (3rd, Calgary). 2022 Budget Proposals – due Jan 15

Aaron Sequillion RIP

Longtime Edmonton chess player Aaron Sequillion has passed away November 21 unexpectedly at the age of 33. Aaron had achieved a CFC rating as high as 2247 and most recently participated in the 2021 Banff Open.

2021 Southern AB Open – Nov 27-28 CCC

Matthew Atwood will be organizing the 2021 Southern AB Open at the Calgary Chess Club Nov. 27-28.

November 27-28CFC/FIDE Rated5 rounds @ 90/30Round times: Saturday – 10 am, 2 pm, 6 pm; Sunday – 10 am, 2 pm or ASAP. A 30-minute break between games is guaranteed. Default late time is 60 minutes.

Entry fee: $35. $5 discount for juniors (age 20 and under). GM/WGM/IM/WIM/FM title holders receive free entry. CFC membership is required. Prizes: TBD, based on entrants and after expenses. Byes: A maximum of two ½-point byes available in rounds 1-4 if requested before the start of round 1.The winner will receive an invitation to the  2022 Alberta Closed.

ACA Annual General Meeting – October 10th at 2 pm

The ACA Annual General Meeting will take place after the 3rd round of the Alberta Open. The meeting will also be available on Zoom. If the Alberta Open cannot be held due to COVID-19, then it will take place on Zoom. Any ACA member may attend.
