Tournament format: 6-round Open Swiss, CFC rated both sections and FIDE rated in over 1800 section.   1. 1800 and over  2. Under 1800

CFC membership is required and may be purchased on site. Annual membership is $43 for adults, $28 for juniors. CFC tournament membership is $21 for adults, $11 for juniors.

Time Control: Game in 90 minutes + 30 seconds/move

Round Times
Friday, November  12: 12 noon and 5 pm
Saturday, November 13: 10 am  and 3 pm
Sunday, November 14: 10 am and 3 pm
(everyone is guaranteed a minimum of 30 minutes break between games)

Pre-registered players (which means you have paid already) do not have to check in before round one. Please show up at 11:30 for pre-tournament announcements. There may be line ups, since proof of vaccination will be needed before entering the Banff Centre buildings. Pairings will be done in advance of round 1. If you cannot make it, please text Ian Findlay at 416-471-1272 as soon as possible.

$90 before Oct 1, less any discounts listed below. $100 Oct 1 and later.

Under 1800 Section
$70 before Oct 1, less any discounts listed below. $80 Oct 1 and later.

Discounts: (deduct from regular price)
$20 Juniors (under 20 years old),  senior players (over 65), FMs, females, first time CFC players, players representing a developing chess nation. $10 50-64 years old ** Only 1 discount per player.

Playing up a Section: Players who were not rated 1800 when they registered or on Nov 9, can play up a section for an additional $20.

Byes: A maximum of two half-point byes available in rounds 1-5 if requested before the start of round 1. A round 6 bye is a 0 point bye.

Withdrawal: Please inform the director if you plan to withdraw from the tournament.

Prizes: ((100 % of the Sum of entry fees, minus the ACA dues of $10 per paid entry and minus other expenses not covered by ACA))  $500 added to 1st prize. If a tie, then an Armageddon playoff for the $500 anonymous donation. Armageddon rules will be posted at site.

FIDE has donated 1000 Euros via their FIDE Aid package with the following stipulation

BANFF OPEN 2021 CHESS COVID-19 POLICY
These are subject to change to conform to the Alberta Government guidelines and also the ACA COVID Policy stated below.

The Banff Centre will be following the REP (restrictive exemption program) set forth the the AB government. This means proof of vaccination will be required before entering any Banff Centre building and masks will be required in all public spaces, including at your board.

Banff Policy for under 12 years old:

A facility (or event) that is running a restriction exemption program is allowed to include those 12 and under without screening them (as they are currently ineligible for the vaccine).  This would be similar to other public places that are allowing those 12 and under to participate (restaurants, spectators at sports events, etc.  The chess tournament is not classified as a “youth activity” so those 13-17 would still need to be screened and provide proof of vaccination/negative test/medical exemption.  All participants still need to wear masks while indoors and exclude themselves if they are experiencing any symptoms.

By entering this tournament, players agree that the Banff Centre, ACA and Banff Open organizers cannot guarantee that they will not as a result become infected with COVID-19. Entrants further certify that during the 14-day period before the tournament, they have not experienced any symptoms associated with COVID-19, which include fever, cough, or shortness of breath, or had close or direct contact with anyone who is either confirmed or suspected of having COVID-19.

Masks are recommended but not mandatory and should be worn in all public spaces.  This includes the skittles room and MacLab.

No eating is allowed in tournament rooms. Drinks are OK.

Temperature checks.  Anyone with a temperature of 38 C or higher will be required to leave and cannot continue in the tournament or spectate.

Crowds should not congregate around pairings or standings or outside doors of the playing halls. Social distancing principles and any markers must be respected.  Failure to observe social distancing may result in removal from the tournament and/or site, without refund.

Non-playing spectators may be restricted, circumstances depending. Spectators who do not observe social distancing will be expelled. 

BEST PRACTICE SUGGESTIONS: Please try to limit the number of non-players in tournament areas.  If you have a group of young players competing, please consider assigning no more than one or two parents to wait for those players at any given time. This will reduce the crowds around exits and in hallways, which promotes a safer atmosphere for everyone.

Within two weeks of the tournament, if you experience any symptoms consistent with COVID-19, please do NOT attend. These symptoms include, but are not limited to, fever, respiratory distress, and shortness of breath. If within two weeks of the tournament, you have any close or direct contact with anyone who is either confirmed or suspected of having COVID-19, please do NOT attend. This includes close or direct contact with anyone who is experiencing or displaying any symptoms consistent with COVID-19.
