2020 Alberta Chess Challenge

Date: Saturday, March 28th, 2020 @ 11:00 a.m.

 Red Deer Public Schools, Central Services, 4747-53 Street, Red Deer, AB (please note, this is a different venue than last year!)

Format:
 Sections by grade (1-12). The exact format of each section will depend on the number of participants but players will play a minimum of three games. Chess ’n Math rated, but the higher of CFC and Chess ’n Math ratings will be used for pairing purposes.  Open to Alberta residents only.  The TD’s reserve the right to confirm a player’s grade.

Time control:
 Game in 25 minutes with a 5-second delay for grades 3-12.  Clocks may be added in grades 1 and 2 at TD discretion.

Entry fee: 
$25 if pre-registered online by 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 25th; $35 registering online later or registering on site.

Registration
Fill out the registration form below (Player Name, Grade, School Name, Contact E-Mail). Payment may be made by e-transfer to davidludwigCA@gmail.com or on site by cash. The deadline for online registration is Thursday, March 26th.

Schedule

The tournament will start at 11:00 a.m. precisely. You must arrive before 10:45 a.m. to ensure you are paired in the first round, or else you may have to wait until round two. Check-in at the venue runs from 10:05 – 10:45 a.m.  There is no designated lunch break, but players will be given a 30-minute break at the midway point in their grade (after round two for sections with three or four rounds).  Please note that lunch will not be provided this year.

Prizes
1st place finishers in each grade will receive trophies. 2nd and 3rd place will receive medals.  Grade winners earn the right to represent Team Alberta at the 2020 Canadian Chess Challenge in Montreal. The ACA will provide a $350 travel grant to each winner to help offset travel expenses for the May 16-18 tournament.

Tie-break procedure
a. For 1st place ties, there will be a 15-minute playoff game between all tied players. If still tied, there will be 10-minute playoff games until a winner is decided.  More details will be posted on-site before the first round.

b.  No playoff games for 2nd or 3rd place. 2nd/3rd place ties are broken using Mathematical Tiebreaks (in order:  Head to Head, Buchholz, Sonnenborn-Berger, Cumulative Score, and Total Wins).
