List of Edmonton Instructors

IM Edward Porper

A Chess International Master is teaching “chess for success”. You will learn, how to be successful in the game (that is, how to win in it) and outside of it. Setting realistic goals and pursuing them, taking chances in a smart way and dealing with adversities – all that is equally important in chess and in life, and I focus my teaching program on improving those skills. Winning tournaments and acquiring titles is a nice bonus to be expected.

WIM Agnieszka Matras-Clement (Leduc)

I have 15 years of experience coaching students aged 6 to 18, including private lessons, coaching in groups and coaching in chess camps. I am a former coach of  a provincial team in Poland as well as the Polish National team and was the head chess teacher of a primary school in Poland from 2005 to 2012. I have a master’s degree in teaching children and have written and published a book on how to teach chess to children.

I have been a Woman International Master since 2000 and am currently one of the highest rated players in Alberta and one of the highest rated women players in Canada. I was a member of the Polish National Team from 1997-2002, a member of the Polish World Champion Team under 20 in 2001 and Champion of Europe under 20 in active chess in 2002.

I invite all players from beginners to advanced. I care about chess as a sport and believe that chess can help your child in their development as a person and in thinking logically. I believe that the best results are seen when a child enjoys playing chess, so I try to engage my students and make lessons as entertaining as possible while still focusing on the fundamentals that need to be learned. Some of the results I have seen from my students include medals in national and provincial championships as well as strong finishes in international championships.

Michael Ludwig (St. Albert)

My coaching career began in the 2015-16 school year, when I started running elementary school chess clubs. I have a peak CFC rating of 2187, and I’m the #1 player in St. Albert.

I frequently teach the very basics of chess, both to juniors and newer adults, but beyond that my focus is on developing a sense of where your pieces belong on the chessboard. I also believe in the importance of identifying weaknesses in a position and coming up with ideas on how to continue.

Individual lessons are designed specifically for each player, but some time will be spent on things every chess player ought to know (strategic and tactical themes, endgame techniques, etc.) as needed.

Please get in touch for rates, which include specials for new students and multi-lesson packs!

David Yao

I have over two years of teaching experience with a specific target on the younger population. During this time, I have conducted both group and private lessons. Since I’m a young chess player myself, I understand the process of a developing mind and how it associates with chess. My teaching strategies involve active participation, tactics training, and a complete overall understanding of the game. I won numerous awards and hit a peak rating of 1995 CFC.

Teaching rates are negotiable.
