List of Calgary Instructors

NM Vlad Rekhson

I have several years of coaching experience which includes: private lessons, group instruction, as well as teaching classes in schools. I currently teach at The Renert and Edison schools in Calgary, where chess has been included in the regular school curriculum.

My students range from complete beginners to advanced competitive players.

During private instruction, I first assess the student and besides determining their chess skills, I try to evaluate their approach to learning, what they enjoy the most about chess and base my future lesson plans on that.

Besides being a chess instructor and a National Master, I am also an International Chess Arbiter. I have been the Chief Arbiter of two Canadian Opens, 6 Edmonton Internationals and an assistant Arbiter in a European Club championship.

NM Steven Peter

I have been a titled national master since 1989. Over the years, I have won several tournaments including two Alberta Opens, the Ontario High School Championship, and many speed chess championships against high-ranking players. I have mentored many students, including adults and children, and coached a Canadian (Calgarian) under-16 champion. Beginning in October 2019, I will be teaching a course at the University of Calgary called “Chess Wise: For Beginners and Novice Players.”

When we first meet, I will assess your motivation, aptitude, and skills, and I will then tailor an individual program to help you progress. I have an extensive amount of chess resources such as books and DVDs to help with personalized instruction.

My approach is pragmatic and engaging and focuses on both short-term and long-term goals. My fees are competitive.
