2023 Alberta Chess Challenge

Format: 12 Sections (Grades 1-12). The exact format of each section will depend on the number of participants but players should expect to play 5 games.
CFC and Chess’N Math (CMA) rated. Open to Alberta residents only.
Time control: Game in 25 minutes with a 5-second delay.

Entry fee:
Regional Chess Challenge participants: $35 if pre-registered online by 10 p.m. on Thursday, April 6.
Non-Regional Chess Challenge participants: $40 if pre-registered online by 10 p.m. on Thursday, April 6.
All players: $45 afterwards and on-site (on-site may not be available depending on the number of registrants).

Registration
Fill out the registration form Alberta Chess Challenge 2023. Payment should be made by e-transfer to calgarychessschool@gmail.com (or if necessary, by cash on-site). The deadline for online registration is Thursday, April 6, 2023 @ 10:00 p.m.

Approximate Schedule on April 8
Registration: 9:45 a.m. – 10:15 a.m.
Rounds 1 and 2: 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Lunch: 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Rounds 3 to 5: 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Tie-breaks (if necessary) and awards: immediately after the completion of the last round.

Prizes in each section
1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers will receive trophies.
Section winners will represent Team Alberta at the 2023 Canadian Chess Challenge. The ACA will provide a $250 travel grant to help offset expenses for travel to Montreal, Quebec for the May 20-22 tournament. Travel reimbursement policies apply.

JUNIOR DRAW RULE
In junior only events, the draw offer and acceptance are only allowed once both players have played 30 moves. For games without scoresheets, allowing the draw will be at the TD’s discretion.

Tie-break procedure
a. There will be playoff games for 1st place ties.
b. No playoff games for 2nd or 3rd place.
