12 Sections\u00a0<\/strong>(Grades 1-12)
Format:\u00a0<\/strong>The exact format of each section will depend on the number of participants but players should expect to play 4 games.
CFC and Chess’N Math rated. Open to Alberta residents only.
Time control:<\/strong>\u00a0Game in 25 minutes with a 5-second delay.
Entry fee: $30<\/strong>\u00a0if pre-registered online by\u00a0Noon, Tuesday, March 20<\/strong>,\u00a0$35<\/strong>\u00a0afterwards and on site. The entry fee includes a light lunch.
Lunch will be guaranteed only to those players who will pre-register online by noon, Tuesday, March 20<\/strong>.
Last year’s winners will receive free entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fill out the registration form on the right. Payment will be made on site by cash. Approximate Schedule on March 24

Registration:\u00a010:15 am – 10:45 am
Rounds 1 and 2:\u00a011 am – 1 pm\u00a0\u00a0
Lunch:\u00a01 pm – 2 pm
Rounds 3 and 4:\u00a02 pm – 4 pm
Tie-breaks (if necessary) and awards:\u00a0immediately after the completion of the last round<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prizes in each section
1st, 2nd, and 3rd place\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>finishers will receive trophies.Section winners\u00a0will represent team Alberta at the 2018 Canadian Chess Challenge. The ACA will provide a $650 travel grant to help offset expenses for travel to St. John’s, Newfoundland for\u00a0 the May 19-21 tournament. Travel\u00a0reimbursement policies\u00a0apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JUNIOR DRAW RULE <\/strong>(adopted by the ACA board on January 13, 2018)
In junior only events, the draw offer and acceptance is only allowed once both players have played 30 moves. Players must prove they have each played 30 moves by showing it on their scoresheets. For games without scoresheets, allowing the draw will be at the TD’s discretion.
Tie-break procedure<\/strong>
1) Head to head result. This will only apply if all the players in a tied group played each other.
2) Tie-break match. If two players are tied, they will play a two-game match. If the tie is for first place, a two game match will be held with the time control of Game\/10 minutes + 5 seconds per move. If the tie is for second, third or best girl prize, the time control will be Game\/3 minutes + 2 seconds per move, each. If more than two players are tied, they will play a round-robin tournament with the same time controls EXCEPT that results from the main event will stand and will not be recontested in a tiebreak match. If one player has an uncatchable score within the group, that player will be awarded the prize. If the tie is still not broken, the procedure will be repeated; however, if only two players are tied, they will only play one game with the colours determined at random. If the tie is not broken for the 1st place, they will repeat the procedure but with the Game\/3 minutes + 2 seconds\/move time control.
3) Tie-breaks for all other places will be determined by the following criteria:
a) Head to Head
b) Buchholz (total scores of opponents)
c) Sonnenborn-Berger (total scores of opponents beaten plus half the scores of opponents drawn)
d) Cumulative score after each round
e) Total wins<\/p>\n\n\n\n
