Weekend chess tournaments in the Prairie provinces usually consist of five rounds over three days, which provides players with a limited time to eat, drink and socialize with friends and fellow participants. Weekend chess tournaments, particularly in Saskatchewan, also typically have the same people playing each other over and over again. The Battle at the Border was designed to eliminate these typical characteristics of a weekend swiss in order to provide players with a more enjoyable experience.

The Battle at the Border's format of two rounds per day affords participants plenty of time for eating, drinking and socializing. In fact, organizers take the social aspect of the Battle one step further by arranging a group supper after the second round (traditionally held at Boston Pizza). Additionally, the Battle's Lloydminster location (on the border between Alberta and Saskatchewan) helps attract players from all over Western Canada, resulting in opportunities to face new opponents.

While these details differentiate the Battle at the Border from a typical weekend chess tournament, the Battle's contributions to local chess culture are what make it an unforgettable experience. Anyone who has heard the grenade story or seen the Battle trophy will attest to this, but if you're not convinced we encourage you to visit us in September and see what all of the hype is about. In addition to everything mentioned above, this year's event will feature some truly amazing players and we'd love for you to be a part of it.
